Goodreads Synopsis

Hidden in the depths of eighteenth-century London, a secret apothecary shop caters to an unusual kind of clientele.

Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary's fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious twelve-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries.

Meanwhile in present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, running from her own demons. When she stumbles upon a clue to the unsolved apothecary murders that haunted London two hundred years ago, her life collides with the apothecary's in a stunning twist of fate--and not everyone will survive.

Review

This book surprised me with how much I loved it! As soon as I read the synopsis I knew I was going to enjoy it but I didn't realise I would love it as much as I would. The Lost Apothecary had the right amount of suspense, amazing characters and I loved the narrative of this story! I quickly found myself unable to put this down and devoured it within a day.

I was worried at first that I might not get along with the historical/contemporary switch but honestly, the characters were so unique and the writing was so smooth that the back and forth of these chapters just flowed perfectly.

I loved Nella's chapters the most. I felt as if I was transported to her back alley apothecary and I loved how dark and gritty it was. I was so eager to know what happened next and found myself eager to read more. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Caroline's chapters and learning more about her life and watching as she put all the pieces together. She was such a strong and intelligent character that I couldn't help but admire.

Overall, The Lost Apothecary was a captivating dual timeline story that had me on the edge of my seat and needing more. I'm writing this review a week after reading it and I cannot stop thinking about it. I definitely recommend this book to any historical fiction lovers out there!
