Goodreads Synopsis
Following a violent outburst at an awards ceremony, Vidor Kiraly, a prize-winning neuroscientist and Cambridge don, is sent to an isolated psychiatric clinic in the Swiss Alps. When the clinic’s director, Dr Anton Gessen, tries in vain to unearth the missing pieces of Vidor’s life, he suspects his reluctant patient is not who he appears to be.
After one of the patients at the clinic goes missing, Gessen has reason to doubt Vidor’s self-proclaimed innocence.
But what is he hiding, and who might be next?
Review
I fell in love with Ann Gosslin's debut novel and was excited to read her new novel. There is always that anxiety that an author's second book doesn't live up to their first but The Double did not disappoint.
Immediately after finishing this book I did give it a 4 stars but for a few days after I could not stop thinking about this book and ended up bumping it up to a five star review. Full of suspense, this psychological thriller was so hard to put down. Whilst some people may think the pace was a bit on the slow side I thought it was perfectly paced. This is the kind of book that that doesn't need to be fast paced.
As someone who has a love for psychology and human behaviour this book ticked all the boxes for me. You can tell that Gosslin has done a lot of research for this book but the level of detail in it. The characters are realistic and relatable in terms of the struggles they face and their own stories. The dynamic between the two main characters is so intriguing and I loved the similarities between them.
I really recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark psychological thrillers that hooks you in. I found it impossible to put down and I honestly cannot wait to see what Ann Gosslin writes next!
