Goodreads Synopsis
Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.
Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.
Review
This book was selected in a buddy read I was involved in and honestly I couldn't wait to start it. I had already purchased the book along with the next two books in the series because I had that much faith in it.
The buddy read was meant to last three week, reading 10 chapters a week.
I ended up reading the whole book in one day.
I could not put this book down. I was absolutely hooked from the first chapter and found myself falling in love with the characters and the world that Kerri Maniscalco has created.
Audrey Rose is a strong heroine that is constantly fighting against the social norms of how a woman should behave. With her deep fascination of forensic science I found myself loving this character and the book so much. Thomas Cresswell was such an interesting character and I couldn't help but fall to his charm and personality.
Maniscalco did her research and it really shows. The anatomical descriptions brought images to life in my head as if it was a movie on the big screen. You can also tell that she did an immense amount of research into Jack the Ripper.
This mystery had me guessing throughout and constantly changing who I thought was Jack the Ripper. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can see why so many people adore this series. Maniscalco's writing is perfection and so immersive that I cannot wait to pick up the next book in the series.
With twists and mystery at every corner and real period photos throughout this is the perfect book to read around Halloween!
