Goodreads Synopsis

Before: Luce Cannon is on the road. Success is finally within her grasp: her songs are getting airtime; the venues she's playing are getting larger. But mass shootings, bombings and now a strange contagion are closing America down around her.

The gig Luce plays tonight will turn out to be the last-ever rock show as the world's stadiums, arenas and concert halls go dark for good.

After: Rosemary is too young to remember the Before. She grew up, went to school and works in the virtual world of Hoodspace. Only a few weeks ago she was a customer service rep for Superwally, the corporate monolith of automated warehouses and drone deliveries that services almost every consumer need, but now she's about to do something she's never done before... she's going to take to the road, in the real world.

Working for StageHoloLive, which controls what is left of the music industry, her job is to find new talent, search out the illegal backroom jams and bring musicians into the Hoodspace hologaphic limelight they deserve.

But when Rosemary sees how the world could actually be, that won't be enough.

Review

A Song For A New Day was such an interesting and thought-provoking book that had me eagerly reading and struggling to put down.

It was easy to relate the premise of this book, after a strange disease spreads throughout America things change and everything becomes virtual. Everything, including music shows are done through the world of Hoodspace and honestly it's such an interesting idea and gave me a lot of Ready Player One vibes in terms of creating an avatar etc. Whilst a lot of areas of life are effected this book focuses on the music side of things and what happens when bands and singers can no longer perform to a crowd as meeting in large groups is illegal.

The book starts off flipping between the before and after, following both Luce and Rosemary in their own unique journeys. Luce has worked so hard for her moment which is taken away by the contagion and she struggles to deal with normal life. Luce was such an interesting character to me and I found myself more invested in her journey throughout this book. She was tough, independent and stood for what she believed in, even if it got her into trouble.

Rosemary on the other hand has known nothing different. She's grown up in this world and is now venturing out and learning what life was like when people performed to a crowd. She deals with a lot of new struggles, ones that a lot of people can relate to now thanks to Covid-19 but she's a strong character who not only has to learn to face her fears but come to terms with what her new job may entail.

Sarah Pinsker is an amazing author, whose words completely drew me in and had me imaging a world like this, or even ours becoming like it. Honestly, I couldn't imagine a world where music isn't performed live and that everything was virtual. Being in that atmosphere with the band/singer is like nothing you can imagine! There is just something so magical about it!

I definitely recommend picking this one up, especially if you're a lover of music and dystopian novels!
